Christmas Wish List

Most of the items on my Christmas list this year are new running clothes (no surprise there); I only have a few items that I really love and wear all the time, and I’m slowly trying to build up a running wardrobe. The weather does not vary much here (although it’s actually been pretty chilly the last couple days), so I always wear Lululemon shorts (I’m pretty sure they’re the Turbo shorts, which Lululemon seems to not carry anymore. The Groovy look pretty similar though), and some kind of top. I prefer to wear long sleeves when I run, even if it’s not that cold out, and the Lululemon Run: Swiftly Tech Long Sleeve is the best one I’ve found. It keeps me cool when it’s warmer out, and warm if it’s chilly out. And the fit is perfect. I think I prefer long sleeves because if I wear a tank top, my hair is so long that it just sticks to me when I get sweaty, or gets caught in my armpits… it’s really attractive. And I haven’t found a short-sleeve shirt I’ve liked enough to wear a lot, either.

Anyways, here are the major items on my Christmas list this year:

1. Garmin 220 – I need a Garmin so badly, my Nike+ on my iPod Nano is so wonky and inaccurate, even after I calibrate it.

2. Madewell Transport Tote in English Saddle – I’ve been wanting this bag for, oh I don’t know, two years? Ever since I became completely obsessed with all things Madewell and my entire wardrobe reflects it now.

3. Running clothes – all of them. For example:

Oiselle Roga Short

You get the picture. Pretty much anything cool-looking, I want.

4. Yurbuds Venture Duro – I’ve been an avid Yurbuds user for a few years now, and I’d love these updated earbuds. Yurbuds are great because they don’t block out the noise of traffic and stuff, and they don’t fall out. Big fan.

5. Random running accessories – gloves (but really, when would I need them. I just assume I’m going to be running through the snowy fields of England next year and have to stock up on things like this), running water bottle with handle (I’ve heard good things about Nathan, probably go with that), I’d probably wear a hat at some point if it was raining (again, doesn’t rain in Santa Barbara, but I must be prepared for rainy runs through the hills in Germany!), etc.

Hopefully I’ll get a couple of these items, and if not, I’m sure I’ll end up buying them myself in the New Year.

Race Decisions

After the Santa Barbara Half Marathon a few weeks ago, I was seriously turned off from running after having a pretty bad race (despite my PR), which only lasted about one or two days (not surprisingly). I didn’t want to sign up for another race and I figured I’d just go to bootcamp every day instead. Again, that lasted for a very short amount of time. Now I’m itching to sign up for another half marathon, sometime early next year. I’m actually already registered for the San Diego Half Marathon on March 9 (which I’d love to do since it was my very first half), but like I said before, I’m not sure if Jeremy and I will still be in California in March. I found out about the Mermaid Series Half Marathon on February 8, and it’s an all-women race that’s really close to where my grandma lives in Pacific Beach. I looked at some reviews online of past races, and it seems to be a popular one.

It’s pretty pricey, but seems to be a good fit. There are a slew of other races I’d love to do, but sometimes it’s hard to choose the perfect race. It will be my third half marathon, so I’m still fairly new to running longer races and not 100% confident in my ability to know how much time I need to give myself between them.

February 8 is about two months away, which brings up another issue. Most half marathon plans are 12 weeks long, but I’m looking at about 8 weeks. It seems like that would be plenty of time since my last half was last month, but I’m so paranoid about getting injured that I don’t want to overdo anything. But do I necessarily need to follow a plan from the beginning if I just ran a half? So many questions and things to consider! Not to mention we’re going to Georgia/Tennessee from Christmas Eve-January 11, so I need to consider how much I’ll realistically be able to train during that time. I plan on running a ton when we’re in Athens (especially because we’ll be eating our way through our old favorite restaurants), but we’ll be in the mountains in Gatlinburg, Tennessee for four days in a cabin, and it may be snowy and I don’t know if I’ll be able to run outside. But hopefully I can just plan around it and figure something out!

Can’t wait to be back in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Too bad we’re missing the fall foliage!

My Body is Weird

I’ve been really wanting to start my morning runs before sunrise so I can see it happen over the ocean. It’s basically the best thing in the entire world, and it’s been forever since I’ve done it. So this morning, that was my plan. Unfortunately, my body had other ideas, and (maybe because I was worried I’d miss my 6:13am alarm? Although that’s never happened) woke me up around 4am. I thought maybe it was time to wake up, but my heart sank a little bit when I looked at my clock. After all that, I ended up not getting out of the house until a little before 7, so I knew I’d already missed the actual sunrise. By the time I got to the beach, this was my view:

Sooo I’m not complaining. But one of these days I’ll make it before the sun actually rises.

I ran five miles, and it pretty much sucked. It’s so weird that you can feel so incredibly good running and then a couple days later feel like you can’t even pick up your feet.

My Nike+ on my iPod Nano is pretty jacked, so I’m REALLY hoping I’m getting a Garmin for Christmas. If not, I’ll be buying one with my hard-earned money anyway. Christmas is three weeks away? Weird.

Thanksgiving Week

Happy belated Thanksgiving! The past week has been really nice and relaxing, and it seems like Jeremy and I mostly watched movies (Jeremy had never seen Love Actually so obviously we had to watch it ) and ate popcorn and drank hot chocolate. Prettay nice. I usually try to exercise on Thanksgiving so I don’t feel completely horrible after a few days of binge eating, but this year I really upped the ante. I had two really hard bootcamp classes on Monday and Tuesday, then ran five miles Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. During Wednesday and Thursday’s runs, my knees and hips began aching a bit and it dawned on me that I needed new shoes. I’m not to the point (yet) where I have a ton of different running shoes, and it always surprises me when I wear out a pair pretty fast. I went to the local running store here (Santa Barbara Running) and had the guy working there help me choose a new pair. I really want to wear Brooks or Mizunos, but whenever I get analyzed by running store employees, they always recommend something different. I ended up going with the newer version of my old shoe, the Asics GT-2000 2. I wore them on Friday and Saturday, and I seriously felt like a completely different runner. I really must have overdone it with my other pair. I also went down half a size per the guy’s recommendation, and that seemed to really help feeling like I was in control and could go faster than usual.

Eventually I’d love to have a few different pairs of shoes to wear depending on what kind of run I have on the schedule. On Thursday, I panicked for a minute when I realized that I had forgotten one of the silicone pieces on my Yurbuds and had to run without music, which I never do. It turned out MUCH better than expected though, and it was actually really nice.

A few pictures from the last week:

Every Thanksgiving and Christmas my dad and I go down to my favorite beach after we eat. I really savored it this year since Jeremy and I won't be here for Christmas.

Santa Barbara International Veterans Half Marathon

Well, my second half marathon is done. It seemed like it took FOREVER to arrive, since I registered so far in advance and my first half marathon was in March. I wish I had done another one in between, but I had a weird ankle injury and couldn’t run the Wine Country Half I was registered for in April, then I got married in June and wedding planning took over my life. The SB race was great, and very special since I grew up here in SB and my family still lives here and they got to see me at the finish line.

I felt really strong the morning of the race, and was feeling pretty confident that I was going to beat my PR of 2:15 that I got in March. I ended up running at 2:04, but I definitely hit a wall for the first time ever. Looking back, I think my problems were that I didn’t do enough speed work, I tapered too much,  I over-carbloaded, and I pushed myself too hard the mile before the huge hill at mile 10. I was so worried about having tired legs the day of the race that I didn’t do much the entire week before (except bootcamp on Monday), and I carbloaded for an entire two days, which I didn’t do for the last half.

Trying to hide how much I was struggling in the last mile…

After I crossed the start line, the first mile marker came so incredibly fast, I thought it might have been a mistake. It was encouraging though, and I was hoping that the whole race would feel like that. After that it kind of just went downhill (metaphorically, not literally, unfortunately). I didn’t start to feel good until about mile 8 when there started to be more spectators and I’m so familiar with the roads here that I knew exactly how the rest of the course was going to be. I knew it would be flat until the mile 10 hill, and during this time I was thinking back to my other half and thinking afterward how I should have pushed myself more. So this is what I did, but I’m pretty sure I expended all my energy during those miles. I got to the bottom of the hill pretty tired, but continued to push strongly about half-way up the half-mile hill. That’s when the wall hit, and I really struggled the rest of the time. I saw a few people from bootcamp during that time which occasionally gave me little pushes, but other than that, I pretty much felt like a hundred-pound weight was on my body and I had no energy left to give. During the final stretch, I really slowed down, but it was the best mile of the race by far; it was Veterans Day weekend so there were flags everywhere, and volunteers were handing out small flags to carry to the finish line. I kept trying to pick it up, but it was tough. My husband and mom were near the SB City College track where the finish line was, but I missed them since I didn’t know where they would be. When I actually got to the track, I had to run almost a full lap before finishing, and when I was about .25 away from the finish, I saw my friend’s sister coming up behind me, and for some reason I felt a huge surge of energy and knew I could sprint to the finish. I was determined to smile across the finish line, and I sort of accomplished that, looking at the pictures. I felt so worn out after the race, I was really turned off of running for about a day, but I knew it wouldn’t last long. I also heard from a few people how hard this race was for them, maybe because of the strong head winds the whole time, particularly at the big hill.

I sort of managed a smile crossing the finish line. One day I’m going to perfect the arms up finish line pose that everyone seems to have down.

I’m currently just doing bootcamp every day during the week, but am planning on doing a longer run this Saturday.

Finished!

My next half marathon is scheduled for March (San Diego Half Marathon, where it all again), but Jeremy and I are now hoping to be in Europe by then, so I’m thinking about signing up for the Mermaid Series Half Marathon in February, since my grandma lives in San Diego and I really want to run another one there since she loved seeing me so much last year.

For the next race, I really want to get more mileage logged in general, and definitely some speed work. Today in bootcamp we did a timed mile and I got 8:08. We’re going to time ourselves every day for the next five weeks, and I’m really excited to see how much  I progress in that time.
